Task 1 (due Mon 3/9)
Write a letter to the speaker of the poem, commenting on what you find interesting in the extract. Describe your favourite, peaceful place.

Task 2 (due Wed 5/9)
In ‘Foster’, the young girl embarks on an interesting journey. You have been asked to give a short talk on radio about an interesting journey you have made. Write out the text of the talk you would give.

Task 3 (due Mon 10/9)
‘Foster’ tells the story of a young girl coming of age. Write an opinion piece on the idealism and passions of youth.

Task 4 (due Mon 15/9)
Imagine you are Yeats and you are in the process of writing this poem. Based on your reading of this poem, write two diary entries based on your feelings towards the people of Ireland.

Task 6 (due Monday 22/9)
‘The Plough and the Stars’ is set in Dublin in 1916. Poverty and destitution were widespread. Write an article for a newspaper in which you inform people of the steps they can take to make food and household items last longer. (Language of Information)

Task 7 (due Wed 24/9)
Write an article for a website in which you lament the futility of war. (Language of Argument)


Task 8 (due Mon 29/9)
The overall vision in ‘The Plough and the Stars’ is one of bleak hopelessness in the face of the violence in Ireland in 1916. Pretend you are a leader during the 1916 Rising. Write a letter to the people, encouraging them not to lose hope and support the effort.

Task 9 (due Wed 1/10)
Write a speech that you will deliver to the Board of Examiners. You want to persuade them to either include or exclude ‘Easter 1916’ from the curriculum. (Language of Persuasion)

Task 10 (due Wed 8th Oct)
‘The King’s Speech’ tells the story of King George VI and his struggle to cope with his stammer. Write the text of a talk you would give to your classmates on ‘appearances can be deceptive’. (Language of Persuasion)
