3Nore CSPE Action Project

6/2/2015

For our 3rd Year CSPE Action Project, our class , 3Nore , decided to raise awareness about St.Vincent de Paul's work in our community. We gathered donations for the charity during the month of December. A box committee designed and put together a box which was used to collect the donations. We placed the box at the front entrance of the school. A poster committee designed and put up posters around the school to advertise and encourage the students and teachers to contribute old clothes , toys and other belongings they don't use/need anymore. Announcements were made daily to remind everyone in the school about the donation box and our project.

Before leaving school for the Christmas holidays, the box was packed with contributions from many students and teachers in the school. A volunteer from the local St.Vincent de Paul centre came to the school to pick up the box.

A presentation committee made a slide show on the work of St.Vincent de Paul and presented it to a 1st YearCSPE class to raise awareness and explain to them what the charity is really about.

Our class is very happy to have had the chance to raise awareness for the charity and also donate what we could to them.

A mini project on a movie - 2Nore and 2Dee and 2Moy

17/3/2014

In second year, we are watching a movie based on a CSPE concept. It is very enjoyable to watch a movie in class but we must remember that we will be doing a small project on it when it is finished! You will be watching one of two movies - either Invictus (PG 13) or The Help (PG 13).

Both movies are based on the following concepts: Human Dignity/ Rights and Responsibilities/ Democracy/ Law.

Here are some questions to keep in mind for your mini project:

- Is there a role model in the movie that you look up to?
- Is the setting of the movie different to life today?
- Do you disagree with any of the events in the movie?
- How did the movie make you feel?
- Is there any awareness that you feel needs to be raised after watching this movie?
- Is the movie believable?
- Would you have changed anything about the ending?
- Would you recommend this movie to anyone? Why/ why not?

Mr. Fergus O'Dowd visits St. Oliver's

14/3/2014

On Monday, we were lucky enough to welcome Mr. Fergus O'Dowd to our school. We invited the Minister of State to our class to talk to us about our action project. Our project focuses on the concept of 'Democracy'.

Mr. O'Dowd was kind enough to speak to us for over an hour about his experiences as a Minister. He described a typical day for us and explained some of the current news stories for us. We asked him questions about Ukraine, whistleblowing and the unborn child's right to life. We got very passionate and honest answers from Mr. O'Dowd. It is clear that his love of teaching has never left him.

Thank you Mr. O'Dowd for taking time out of your busy schedule to enhance our learning.
